Completed in 2018, the Statue of Unity depicts Vallabhbhai Patel who served as the first deputy prime minister, minister of home affairs, minister of information, and minister of states after India gained independence in 1947. The statue stands at a height of 181.9 meters (597 ft) on a pedestal built on a river island named Sadhu Bet, and contains a museum, memorial garden, and viewing gallery. Within the legs of the statue are gallery spaces that are accessible by elevators where visitors can view exhibitions. Overlooking the water, the statue is a cultural artifact of India’s recent history.
