Housing the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE), the China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFEX), and the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (CSDCC), the Shanghai Financial Exchange Plaza, at the east end of the financial district, complements the City Center Plaza and
frames the center of Pudong and the old City. Three buildings for each individual entity were united through a central plaza at the ground level. A sunken Financial Theatre located in the plaza, forms a sense of the community between the users of the three buildings. This plaza also opens the complex to the city through landscaping along the site’s perimeter.
The underlying attitude and challenge in the design of the Shanghai Financial Exchange Plaza was to design a powerful, unified complex while addressing the three corporations’ individual needs and providing each with an appropriate individual identity. Each have an individual character, while being formally simple and elegant, technologically advanced and environmentally responsible. Data centers and technical floors in each tower occupy the first 6 levels, while at Level 7, a bridge connects the three. The skybridge connecting the three towers accommodates the program’s more public uses and includes an Exhibition Center, Investor Training Center, International Media Center, and the China Securities and Futures Expo Center, as well as a roof garden. The public spaces
extend into Levels 7 and 8 of all three buildings as a unifying element. An interlocking pattern of exterior glass, stone and stainless-steel panels run from the ground level to the bridge.
