SOM’s design leaders will take a holistic look at the design of the innovative new mixed-use workplace. Located in West Loop, 800 Fulton Market is situated in one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Chicago. The project represents Chicago’s enduring strength beyond its industrial past, paving a way for future uses. As one of the first office buildings to open in Chicago during the pandemic, the building creates a welcoming experience for commercial and office tenants back to a workplace that ensures greater safety, health, wellness, and flexibility to accommodate changes in use and capacity over time.

The SOM team worked to design a project that would promote hybrid work practices, providing a variety of spaces across the building’s 60’ lease spans and terracing that could provide a dynamic experience for ten-ants and visitors alike.

Early on, community meetings raised concerns that a new tower in Fulton Market would impede on the vibrant and dynamic pedestrian experience at street-level. Standing at the intersection of high-rise developments downtown and 3-4 story historic buildings, the new mixed use tower relates to the varying scales, rhythms, and textures of the neighborhood through its landscaped, stepped terraces and brick, glass, and steel façade.
