Along with changes in the neighborhood’s skyline, 800 Fulton market symbolizes a shift in corporate work culture. Brimming with amenities and spaces that foster workplace wellbeing, the space demonstrates how mainstream employers have adopted such principles that were previously the burden of the employee.

The developer, Thor Equities, saw potential in Chicago’s Fulton Market district in its capacity to become a thriving business and recreational area similar to that of the Meatpacking District in New York City. Having worked together in both Chicago and New York, the team sought out SOM in May 2018 to design a unique, modern, and sustainable new workplace for Fulton Market that would respect the history and context of the historic district.

Thor had recently completed a building nearby and leveraged that success to invest in the 800 Fulton Market site. The team received an abundance of community feedback through meetings with various local groups. In light of new office buildings nearby that were built quickly to accommodate economic growth, the new tower was to set an entirely standard of architecture in the neighborhood. The design would leverage performance and sustainability to provide a highly efficient, highly amenities office space with access to co-working, office and community space, health and wellness programming, and retail.
