The 26 story buildings at 860-880 North Lake Shore Drive are notable not only for being the first buildings to be framed and clad in steel but also because through these structures Mies tested and perfected features that will come to define his most famous style. Floor to ceiling glass curtain wall, exterior I-beam struts, recessed lobbies within colonnades that opens into a plaza with extensive use of travertine, are some of the features that became central to some of the most remarkable architecture of Mies van der Rohe’s career. In 2009 Krueck Sexton oversaw the restoration, reconstruction and repair of these historic structures.
