Today, it is a well-understood principle, if not always a widely embraced practice, that the interface between a tall building and its context at street level is a critical design element and key to its ultimate success. Beyond this, attention is increasingly turned toward the context itself: the broader urban environment. How can landscape design, transportation and infrastructure planning be optimized to provide an environment that supports the best quality of life for all citizens? What is the role of the tall building and surrounding district in this story? How can city planning be comprehensive and holistic, serving many constituencies at once, while enhancing the natural environment? All of this and more is under discussion in this fascinating session.
